Computer graphics, linear interpolation, and nonstandard intervals

چکیده

This document is an assessment of the value of optimal linear interpolation enclosures and of nonstandard intervals, especially with respect to applications in computer graphics, and of the extent a future IEEE interval standard should support these. It turns out that essentially all present applications of nonstandard intervals to practical problems can be matched by similarly efficient approaches based on standard intervals only. On the other hand, a number of applications were inspired by the use of nonstandard arithmetic. This suggests the requirement of a minimal support for nonstandard intervals, allowing implementations of nonstandard interval arithmetic to be compatible with the standard, while a full support by making one of the conflicting variants required seems not appropriate.

Precision Normals: Beyond Phong

Almost all graphics architectures today support Gouraud shading, linear color interpolation between vertices; system designers aim toward a Phong shading model, linear interpolants of surface normals with a lighting model that supports both diffuse and specular components, as a superior means of rendering accurate images. However, the Phong model still retains serious artifacts. In this paper, ...

Rational-Linear Interpolation of Texture Coordinates and Their Partial Derivatives

computer graphics, texture mapping, interpolation, texture coordinates, texture derivatives, anti-aliasing This paper describes an algorithm for calculating texture coordinates and their partial derivatives during scan conversion of planar polygons. These values are required in texture mapping for antialiasing algorithms, where a resampling filter combines texture elements (a.k.a. texels) in a ...

The Collocation Method for Solving the Radiosity Equation for Unoccluded Surfaces

The radiosity equation occurs in computer graphics, and its solution leads to more realistic illumination for the display of surfaces. We consider the behavior of the radiosity integral operator, for smooth and piecewise smooth surfaces. A collocation method for solving the radiosity equation is proposed and analyzed. The method uses piecewise linear interpolation; and for one particular choice...

CSE168, Computer Graphics II: Rendering Texture Filtering and Mip-Mapping

If we render textures using bi-linear interpolation we will observe aliasing artifacts in ray-traced images. Intuitively, we can avoid such problems by averaging the texture over the area of a pixel instead of evaluating it at a single point. To implement such a procedure we have to solve two problems: First, we need to compute the region in the texture that corresponds to the pixel area. We ca...

Some Topical Variational Geometry Problems in Computer Graphics

o Smooth interpolation of arbitrary curves and surfaces is a major problem in computer graphics. There are very successful variational formulations of similar problems in smooth interpolation of arbitrary functions; these have given rise to the (linear) theory of splines. However, there appears to be as yet no equivalent useful formulation of the general problem, so present computer graphics al...
